Before I let go

Melanated Review and Recap

Before I Let Go is one of those books that stays with you long after you've turned the last page. I enjoy fiction because it's an opportunity to escape from real life, but Kennedy has a way of writing stories that feel less like fiction and more like real life. This book reminded me why she's one of my favorite authors.

I absolutely loved this story, but what made it so special was how differently it resonated with me the second time around. Sometimes we read a book at exactly the right time and it doesn't just entertain us- it meets us right where we are. That's exactly what this story did for me.

Yasmen and Josiah's journey is so much more than a second-chance romance. It's a story about grief, healing, forgiveness and learning that love alone isn't always enough to sustain a relationship. Sometimes life brings unimaginable pain and even two people who deeply love each other can lose their way. What matters is whether they're willing to do the difficult work of healing, both individually and together.

I appreciate that Kennedy Ryan gives an honest portrayal of mental health. She doesn't shy away from showing the weight of depression, loss and emotional exhaustion, but she also reminds readers that seeking help isn't weakness- it's courage. Healing isn't linear and there isn't a quick fix for heartbreak or trauma. Watching the characters choose healing, even when it was uncomfortable, made their journey feel authentic.

What resonated with me most was the reminder that communication, vulnerability and intentionality matter just as much as love. Relationships require two people who are willing to be honest, to listen, to extend grace and to keep choosing each other, even when life gets hard.

Overall, Before I Let Go is a beautifully written emotionally rich novel that explores the complexities of marriage, family, loss and hope Kennedy Ryan doesn't just tell a love story, she tells a story about what it takes to rebuild after life has broken you.

This book reminded me that healing is possible, that love can evolve and that sometimes letting go of who you were is the first step toward who you're meant to be.
